A birthday video chat with my birth family siblings (one of whom shares my special day), and a sweet sister serenade

Since I had to work all day, my 64th birthday Friday didn’t offer all that much excitement. My UT Southwestern Medical Center teammates treated me to a fun outing after work Thursday at Community Beer next to our office at Pegasus Park in Dallas. We do have some family plans today (Saturday).

But I’m gonna have to say that the most special birthday gift I’ve received was Kay and me getting to FaceTime with my birth family full siblings Crys and Terry on Friday evening, catching up on all the latest news and sharing the love we feel for each other. We last saw Crys and Terry when my family visited them in Colorado for Christmas.

As many of you know, Crys and I share birthdays — a high school junior, he turned 17 the day I was born 2/28/61 in Huntington, West Virginia and placed for adoption by our mother Betty, divorced from our father Bob. That birthday bond has been a cherished highlight of my journey since finding my biological family in June 2005.

Near the end of our visit Friday night, Terry offered to serenade Crys and me for our birthday. Our mother Betty was a gifted vocalist who performed with bands in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky for many years, and Terry is also a very talented singer (although she doesn’t think she is!). Since we’re fortunate to have some old recordings of Betty singing, I decided this was also a moment I wanted to capture for posterity, so I asked Terry to wait for me to pull out my phone. As you can see at the video link below, our little Archie makes an appearance too! ☺️

Thank you for this wonderful song, sweet Sis. And thank you for being the amazing Brother and Sister (along with our dear Brother Robin in Heaven) I didn’t know I had for the first 40-plus years of my life. Love you guys forever. 💜💙🧡❤️
