If you’ve watched the enchanting “The Sound of Music” on TV as millions have for years at the holidays, you’ve loved it like we have. But until you’ve experienced it on the big screen like Kay and I did Monday night at Cinemark Mansfield, you haven’t truly seen it — not in all its resplendent, magnificent beauty.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the film that won five Academy Awards and is the third-highest-grossing film of all time behind “Gone With the Wind” and “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope,” the film has been re-released in Cinemark and AMC theaters last Friday through this Wednesday.
I had just turned 4 when the film came out in early March 1965. Kay would not turn 1 for over two months. I didn’t see it on TV until well into adulthood, and even then it was only in bits and pieces for a while. Monday night, I realized I had not seen the breathtaking opening sequence of aerial photography over the majestic Alps in Austria.
For Kay and me, it was an experience as if we had never seen it. We laughed at the funny scenes and we became emotional at the tense moments. It literally gave me chills. When Captain von Trapp, Maria and the seven children were hiding from the German soldiers at the abbey in their attempt to flee near the end of the movie, even though she knew exactly what was happening, Kay couldn’t bear to watch.
We left the theater marveling at how much we’d enjoyed it, how remarkable it was, and how TV screens — no matter the size — don’t come close to doing this cinematic treasure justice. We also said we want to see it again. There are two days left in the 60th-anniversary event, but I don’t know if we will. Maybe!!
If you love, like or even have never seen TSOM, I highly recommend you check out Fandango online to see where it’s showing in your area and get tickets for Tuesday or Wednesday. I **promise** you will not regret it!! You’ll never have this opportunity in your lifetime again!! ![]()
